HCMC to have streets named after Gen. Giap, Che Guevara

Among more than 1,000 new street names added by Ho Chi Minh City’s People Committee, there will be 45 streets named after historical figures of the 20th century, including the legendary general Vo Nguyen Giap.

Accordingly, 45 new street names include those of late president Vo Chi Cong, General Vo Nguyen Giap, late Secretary of the city Party’s Committee Vo Tran Chi, brigadier general Pham Xuan An, researcher Tran Bach Dang and the heroic war doctor Dang Thuy Tram.


Another 27 streets will be named after researchers, artists and technologists including Vietnam’s most famous revolutionary poet To Huu, poet Huy Can, people’s artist Ut Tra On, celebrated composer Trinh Cong Son and Prof. Duong Quang Trung.


There will be 8 streets which will be named after foreign notabilities including Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara as well as an important figure in Latin American literature Jose Marti and famous scientist Marie Curie.


Besides, there are 969 names of late Vietnamese Heroic Mothers which are eligible to be added to the list of potential street names.


In late 2013, HCMC People’s Committee, in collaboration with the HCMC’s Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, collected public opinions on the street naming plan before submitting it to the city People’s Council.


Accordingly, the 7.1km street, which runs from the Dien Bien Phu – Dinh Tien Hoang intersection in District 1 over the Saigon Bridge to Rach Chiec Bridge on Hanoi Highway, was proposed to bear the General Giap’s name.
