Hanoi police bust gang that stole foreigners’ property Police in Hanoi have seized four thieves of a gang that targeted foreigners and are hunting for three other members of the gang, the city Social Crime Investigation Police Department reported.

After days of investigation, an anti-social crime police team recently arrested Bui Van Anh, Nguyen Thi Hong Nguyen, Nguyen Tien Dung and Nguyen Thi Hanh who carried out a theft at a house in Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi in early February.


Anh, Dung and Hanh each has a previous conviction, the police said.


According to the case file, these four thieves went around streets in the capital’s downtown area on February 5 to look for “prey.”


They then saw Natthachat Sanyaphan, a Thai man, sitting beside his wife in front of a house at 30 Nguyen Huu Huan Street, Ly Thai To Ward, Hoan Kiem District. Next to the couple was a bag containing two cameras, five lenses and some accessories.


The thieves approached the couple and three of them began talking and dancing to draw their attention. Meanwhile, the other thieve secretly got close to them from behind and took the bag of camera away.


They later sold all the stolen items at a pawnshop at 8 Quoc Tu Giam Street, Dong Da District, for VND18.5 million (US$870).


After being reported about the case, police launched an investigation that led to the arrest of the four above thieves, who told investigators that their gang had seven members. They also said they often targeted foreigners.


The police are hunting for the three other gang members and expanding their investigation to identify other victims of the gang.
