On February 11, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinated with Ho Chi Minh city People’s Committee to organize a ceremony to receive the UNESCO certificate recognizing Don Ca Tai Tu Nam Bo as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Don Ca Tai Tu (southern folk music) was announced as one of the 11 new inscriptions on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the 8th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage, held in Azerbaijan on December 5, 2013.
The music meets the criteria because it is passed down through generations in southern provinces, re-creates via cultural exchanges, presents a concord and respects among ethnic groups, according to the Department of Cultural Heritage.
Earlier, other genres of traditional Vietnamese music, including “nha nhac Hue” (Vietnamese Royal court music in Central Thua Thien-Hue province), “quan ho” (Bac Ninh Folk Songs in northern Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces) and “ca tru” (northern ceremonial singing), have also been recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural world heritages./.
