— A Vietnamese delegation from the Ministry of Information and Communications, led by Deputy Minister Truong Minh Tuan, has paid a week-long official visit to Cuba to strengthen bilateral cooperation in telecommunication, printing and publishing.


— The Pakistani Embassy has established a Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City and named Duong Quoc Thai, General Director of the Saigon Plastic Packaging JSC, as Honorary Consul General at a launching ceremony. Pakistani Ambassador Zaigham Uddin Azam said the move will contribute to boosting future trade and cooperation between Pakistan and Vietnam, as well as HCMC in particular.

— Though violence has increased in recent days in Ukraine with many dead as anti-government protestors have fought with police on the streets, no Vietnamese casualties have been reported, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There are about 10,000 Vietnamese nationals residing in the European country, mainly in the major cities of Kharkov, Odessa, Kiev, Donetsk and Kherson.


— An anti-smoking publicity campaign, co-organized by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee and the Ministry of Health, has been launched in an effort to raise people’s awareness on the ill effects the habit brings to both smokers and non-smokers by and enforce the Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention by utilizing the mass media to spread the anti-smoking message. Contestants can submit their work online at http://on.fb.me/1deAuel from now to May 31 for an Apple’s iPad for the first prize in each category.


— Some hundreds of state worker in the southernmost province of Ca Mau have been forced to quit their job without any explanation and compensations, a move is said to follow the directive from the municipal People’s Committee to slash unnecessary and unproductive state workers to reduce the burden on the budget for salary payment.

— The upgrade work for a 45km session of the National Road 1A from Hanoi to Bac Giang Province has been kicked off by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam. The VND4.2 trillion ($197.4 million) project will be constructed under the BOT (build-operate-transfer) model and is expected to be complete in June, 2016.

— Vietnam is an honored guest of the 2014 Chaleroi Tourism Fair recently opened in Belgium with a pavilion decorated with displays of traditional conical hats, peach blossoms, bamboos and flowers.


The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has planned to to attract at least four million tourist arrivals, including 185,000 foreign arrivals, and 1.3 trillion VND (61.1 million USD) from tourism this year, according to the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.


Forty Vietnamese contemporary lacquer paintings and 200 handicraft products have been showcased to introduce a mix of both traditional and modern Vietnamese culture in Marseille, southern France. The month-long exhibition is a program in the ongoing “Vietnam Year in France” event.


— “O Dat Ke Thu“, a novel written by amateur writer Le Lan Anh, has been the first Vietnamese novel to be published by L’Hamarttan, one of France’s leading publishing houses. The ceremony to release the book, titled ‘In the land of the enemy’, has been attended by the French Ambassador to Vietnam Jean Noel.

— While a number of Vietnamese television channels are willing to pay high fees worth some tens of millions of US dollar for the broadcast rights of several international football leagues, only few pay attention to the V-League, the top professional football league in Vietnam, with a the broadcast right worth under VND10 billion ($477,000).
