Athletes overcome difficulties There are many disadvantaged athletes in the provincial sport teams with high achievements, but they always strive to rise up to bring glory to Hai Duong’s sport.

Many disadvantages

Members of the provincial Shooting Club have for years known and sympathized with the plight of shooter Pham Thi Ha.

Ha’s parents were workers who had to retired early due to bad health. Ha’s father is also a wounded soldier, so frequently ill.

Especially, after a traffic accident in 2003, Ha’s younger brother suffered cranial traumatism and needed caring. Since then, Ha has had to ask her parents-in-law for permission to return to her parents’ house to conveniently take care of her brother.

Because of low wages, Ha’s father has to fix vehicles and work as a motorbike taxi driver, while Ha’s mother engages in small trade. Therefore, Ha and her husband have to partially shoulder the expenses of living and medicine for the brother.

Nguyen Tuan Hai, Ha’s husband, is also a shooting athlete, so he does not have many conditions to look after his family.

The situation of the weightlifting team’s athlete Nguyen Thi Hoa (born in 1987), whose native land is Luu Thuong hamlet, Hiep An commune (Kinh Mon), is also very difficult.

Hoa is the last-born in a family of three children. Hoa’s father is a wounded soldier with 71% of health lost. Hoa’s father and mother are now 96 and 65, respectively, and no longer able to work.

Hoa has for years set aside about VND1 million from her monthly salary to support her parents. To have the money, Hoa has to reduce spending and only buy necessary utensils. She sometimes wants some cosmetics or jewelry but has never bought any.

Although her family encounters many difficulties, weightlifter Nguyen Thi Hoa always tries to practice and compete to bring glory to Hai Duong's sport

At present, disadvantaged athletes account for around 30% of the provincial sport teams with high achievements. Many are in necessitous circumstances, their father, mother, or both died early or got divorced, etc.

Conquering heights

With passion and no hesitation of difficulties and hardships, since participating in competitions, athlete Ha has brought many high achievements to the sport of not only Hai Duong but also Vietnam.

In which, shooter Ha wins gold medals at almost every national championship. She grabbed two gold medals at the 5th and 6th National Gymnastics and Sports Games. Particularly, no athlete has so far been able to break the national record set by Ha in 2010.

She has also snatched two SEA Games gold medals, bagged many gold medals at Southeast Asian championships, and attended ASIAD twice.

With these results, Ha has become one of the female shooters with the most achievements in the country.

Until now, athlete Hoa has won four gold medals at national championships in 2007, 2008, and 2013 and silver medals at the 5th and 6th National Gymnastics and Sports Games. She has also just finished her university program.

Hoa is now trying to practice to win gold medals at the 7th National Gymnastics and Sports Games (in 2014).

Over the years, the provincial sport training centers have paid attention to and encouraged disadvantaged athletes, such as assistance of 50 – 100% of tuition and more preferred health care regimes. As a result, the athletes have had peace of mind to practice, compete, make important contributions to the province’s sport, and become good examples for other athletes to follow.
