Aiming for pupils to respect cultural heritage
To preserve cultural heritage for future generations, they should be educated in the meaning and importance of and how to treat the heritage.

Mini drama “Affection between teacher and students” performed by pupils of class 5A, Van An Primary School

That is the spirit of the program “Cultural heritage education in schools”, which is being implemented effectively by the culture and education sectors with Van An Primary school (Chi Linh) as the pilot model.

Meaningful class

For the last nearly two months, pupils of classes 4A, 4C, 5A, and 5B of Van An Primary School have been eager to go to school every Saturday morning to attend an extracurricular class about cultural heritage.

“We have been learning about historical and cultural relics, celebrities, and even mountains and rivers in Chi Linh provincial town. I think the classes are very interesting. Knowing Luc Dau river, where six tributaries converge, is the thing I like the best. I will ask my parents to take me there,” excitedly said Nguyen The Phuong, a pupil of class 4A.

Not only learning knowledge of cultural heritage, the pupils also have had chances to visit such relics in Chi Linh as the temples dedicated to teacher Chu Van An and Ba Chua Sao Sa (Meteor Goddess) Nguyen Thi Due during Saturday morning classes. At each relic, teachers explain in detail the history and meaning of each item and part of the temple.

Positive perceptions of the primary pupils have improved through both the teachers’ lectures and art practice sessions such as performing mini dramas about celebrities, learning to sing folk songs, and painting pictures of relics. After each class, the pupils are more knowledgeable about and prouder of the land they are living on.

Passion aroused

To make the pupils have a passion for classes about culture heritage, teachers have had to study and find out many lively and attractive teaching methods.

“Since the program was deployed, I have collected many more materials on cultural heritage in Chi Linh from numerous sources, like books, newspapers, the internet, and documents in relic sites. Then, I extracted the most necessary and attractive information to tell my pupils,” said Le Thi Oanh, head teacher of class 4A. “Classes are similar to story telling sessions rather than teaching ones. I always try to find out and emphasize special features in each story for the pupils to remember easily.”

The method of teaching through stories, pictures, and fact-finding trips has taken effect as every pupil now knows a lot of information and stories about King Hung Dao Tran Quoc Tuan, teacher Chu Van An, Meteor Goddess Nguyen Thi Due, etc. when asked.

In early last January, the fourth-grade pupils had a chance to perform at the program “Returning to the heritage roots” held in Chu Van An temple. That was also a big motivation encouraging the pupils to passionately study and practice art items about celebrities and historical relics.

Combining many factors

Nguyen Thi Ngu, Headmistress of Van An Primary School, said before the implementation of the program, the school had maintained very well classes about the local history as well as integrated cultural heritage knowledge into other subjects, including Vietnamese, history, geography, nature and society, science, art, morality, and gymnastics.

Nonetheless, the program has helped the cultural heritage education become more systematic and intensive. The pupils are enthusiastic during classes and remember knowledge so carefully that the teachers have been surprised many times.

To effectively realize the program, it is necessary to have a detailed and scientific plan and attract many sources to the program, according to Nguyen Thi Ngu.

In the coming time, Van An Primary School will organize contests of sports, art, and question answering on commemorative occasions like March 26 and May 19 so that the pupils will have chances to show the knowledge they have learnt in the program.

From the second semester of this school year, Van An Primary School is to carry out the cultural heritage education program at all classes of grades 3, 4, and 5.

The Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in conjunction with the education sector will also continue to implement the program in some other schools from the 2014-2015 school year.
