The first H5N1 death in 2014 reported in Vietnam

VietNamNet Bridge – After a week of illness, a 52-year-old man in Binh Minh commune, Bu Dang district of Binh Phuoc province, died. This is the first death by influenza A (H5N1) in 2014, after 9 months of no human case reported.


According to the announcement released yesterday by the Department of Preventive Medicine, on January 11, the patient had symptoms such as fever, cough and shortness of breath and was brought to the Bu Dang General Hospital.


He was diagnosed of viral pneumonia. Six days later, the patient was transferred to the Infectious Diseases Ward of Binh Phuoc Provincial Hospital.


As the situation got worse, on January 18 the patient was transferred to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City but he died the same day.


Test results reveal that the patient caught avian influenza A (H5N1) virus. Epidemiological investigation showed that the patient’s family slaughtered and ate duck meat. In the surrounding area, some chickens and ducks have died of unknown causes.


The local health authorities are keeping an eye on the area and the patient’s family members.
