On January 20, Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, vice chairwoman of Hanoi city People’s Committee attended a conference to review the work in 2013 and deploy tasks for 2014, of the Council for Scientific Consultancy for Thang Long imperial citadel.
Thang Long-Hanoi Relic Conservation Centre Director Nguyen Van Son said that in 2013 the Council for Scientific Consultancy helped the centre carry out the detailed plan for the preservation and promotion of Hanoi ancient citadel relics and Co Loa relics approved by the Prime Minister; upgrade and return the space of Kinh Thien Palace; expand the archaeological research scope; and basically complete the movement of archaeological remains at 18 Hoang Dieu street to 5 Hoang Dieu street and 4 Nguyen Tri Phuong street.
In 2014, Mr Son asked the Council for Scientific Consultancy to give advice to help the Thang Long-Hanoi Relic Conservation Centre to expand excavation areas in the ancient citadel area, especially the management of heritages; studying to reinstate Kinh Thien Palace; and restore Cua Bac gate.
Kinh Thien Palace is a main building in the central sector of the Thang Long imperial citadel. Being built in 1428, the palace was believed to be the most important building, hosting many royal ceremonies. It is also in this palace where royal audiences were held to discuss national issues.
However, the palace was almost destroyed at the end of the 19th century by the French, and what remains today are a 100 cm-high banister to the south and large stone steps carved with dragons./.
