The Akademik Shokalskiy, carrying 74 passengers and crew, has not moved since it was trapped by thick sheets of ice driven by strong winds on December 24.

The cost of rescuing the passengers of the Akademik Shokalskiy has been estimated at up to EUR1.5 million. The Australian government plans to recover the cost from insurers.

The Akademik Shokalskiy rescue costs were also faced by the governments of China, France and the US, which sent ships to help.

The vessel was being used by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) to follow the route explorer Douglas Mawson travelled a century ago./.
