This storm comes two weeks after a weather pattern known as the polar vortex brought heavy snow and record low temperatures to the eastern of the US.

The bad weather left thousands of air travellers wondering when they were going to get home. More than 3,000 flights were cancelled in the US on January 23 and another 1,400 were cancelled on January 24.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers in Washington were ordered to stay home. Schools and offices also shut down, and the White House called off its Tuesday press briefing.

The storm hit Washington DC first before moving north to Philadelphia, New York and Boston. This is the second spell of heavy weather experienced by the Eastern Seaboard since the start of the year.

The National Weather Service said the eastern US faces temperatures 10 to 25 degrees below the average on January 21-22./.
