Nine years ago, Phung Tan Thanh’s wife, Nguyen Thi My Hanh, became sick after giving birth to their third child in Phu Yen Province. Initially, she just showed her unusual behaviour, such as sudden fits of crying or laughing. Later she was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Despite treatment, her condition did not improve, but even became worse. Adding to the family burden were extreme financial troubles.

In 2010, villagers donated money to help them build a small new house. However, even now the house has yet to be painted.

One month ago, Thanh left home for the central highlands town of Kon Tum to cut sugarcane in order to earn a bit of money, leaving his ailing wife to be taken care of by his mother and neighbours. However, on his way to the sugarcane plantation, he had a traffic accident which partially paralysed him.

Pham Thi Hiep, their 73-year old neighbour, said that every day, she calls on other neighbours to help the Thanh’s family. On the day that Thanh got into the accident, the children had to beg local villagers for money to save their father. Some neighbours were sympathetic and gave them rice and food.

In order to help the family, donations should be sent through:
