Khiet praised the contributions that Buddhist dignitaries and followers have made to society, particularly through their charitable activities.

“The compassionate philosophy of Buddhism has become entrenched in society,” she said.

The Party official said the organisation of the United Nations Vesak Day 2014 for the second time in Vietnam demonstrates the development of the country’s Buddhist Sangha. She wished the event success, adding that the experience learned from hosting the celebration will be useful for Vietnam when it organises other international events in the future.

Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nhieu, Permanent Vice President of the VBS Executive Council, briefed the delegation on the Sangha’s recent activities.

He asked for the Commission for Mass Mobilisation’s help in establishing a Buddhist Sangha Executive Council in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau, which is the only one region among the country’s 63 cities and provinces yet to have such a council.

The monk also informed the Party officials that preparations for the UN Day of Vesak have been completed. According to him, more than 80 international delegations have arrived to attend the official opening ceremony on the morning of May 8 at Bai Dinh Temple in the northern province of Ninh Binh.-VNA
