Ho Chi Minh City’s increasing problem with street crime is finding international coverage as foreign tourists are increasingly falling victims to robberies.

On March 11, Egyptian tourist Alaa Mohammad Abdu Ali Aldoh and her friend were reading a map on Luong Huu Khanh Street in District 1, when two men approached on a motorbike and stole her handbag, containing USD230, a wallet and some personal documents.

Robbers often target the backpacker area of Pham Ngu Lao Street in District 1.

On the same day, Japanese Ryo Ichikawa who was standing on Mac Dinh Chi Street in District 1, had his bag robbed by a man on motorbike. He lost 60,000 Japanese Yen, two mobile phones and one watch. Grmanova Zuzana from Slovenia was also had her bag snatched in District 1.

La Quoc Khanh, Deputy Head of the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, admitted the department had received diplomatic notes from the Australian, South Korean and Japanese embassies informing the department that their citizens had been robbed in HCM City.

According to Colonel Nguyen Tan Dat, of District 1’s police division, said that half of the 108 robberies that had taken place 2015 in HCM City involved foreigners as victims.

Municipal Party Secretary Dinh La Thang also admitted complicated security of the city, which has badly affected the city’s image.
