President Truong Tan Sang gives presents to poor residents in border areas.
NDO – President Truong Tan Sang has asked provincial authorities to come up with measures to quickly alleviate poverty in communes bordering China.
The State leader made the request in Dam Thuy commune of Cao Bang province on March 9 as he attended a ceremony to give presents to poor households in communes on the northern border.
In response to President Sang’s initiative, many philanthropic individuals and organisations have donated cement to help poor residents in border areas to harden their house floor, and young cows to help them earn a living.
At the ceremony on March 9, Viettel Corporation and the Border Defence Force, donated 15,000 tonnes of cement, 24,000 young calves and VND1 billion to poor residents in border communes to help them escape poverty.
President Sang said the seven provinces bordering China are of strategic importance to national defence, security and economic development but residents living near the boundary are still facing numerous difficulties.
Recognising the contributions of Viettel and the Border Defence Force, President Sang called for more effective ways to encourage the participation of other organisations and enterprises to support local residents with what they need.
He urged the Northwest Steering Committee to work with provincial authorities to review the appropriateness of their poverty reduction policies so that timely adjustments can be made to improve the lives of local residents and build a peaceful and friendly border for co-operation and development.
