National Geographic released that a plenary session entitled “Extreme Planet”, would take place at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts of New York University on March 4th.

At the session, Mr. Carsten Peter will share his experience and introduce images and videos discovering the world’s largest cave, Son Doong, depicted through low light photographic techniques.

Carsten said Son Doong cave where “skylights” and a jungle were silhouetted against the underground river flowing through the cave could hold a forty story building.

Son Doong is the name of the largest cave in the world. It is not only huge, but a very beautiful place filled with wonders which could be imagimed as closer to an alien habitat than that of planet Earth as a result of the extensive jumgle housed inside. The cave is more than 200 meters wide, 150 meters high, and approx 9 kilometers long, with caverns big enough to fit entire city streets.

Located in Son Trach, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province, the cave was found by a local man named Ho Khanh in 1991but remained unexplored until 2009 when British cavers, led by Howard Limbert undertook the first complete survey of the site.

The cave was formed somewhere between 2 and 5 million years ago by river water eroding the limestone beneath the mountain with the weakspots in the ceiling collapsing to create huge skylights.

In addition to Son Doong cave, Mr. Carsten Perter will also share with the audience his memories on the visits to spectacular and gigantic places in the most extreme environments on the Earth, such as the Crystal cave in Mexico; the Water-cannon in Tornado Alley, Amercia; the Glacier in Mont Blance, Europe; the Sahara Desert and the active volcanoes in the South Pacific./.
