— Police from the Ministry of Public Security said on Friday they have detained and commenced legal proceedings against Phan Minh Nguyet, director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, on charges of “abusing position and power while on duty.” Nguyet was former chairman and CEO of a Hanoi-based limited liable company before taking his post at the said department in January 2014.
— Authorities in Duc Hoa District of the southern province of Long An on Friday mobilized firefighters to destroy a large bee’s nest from which some bees stung a local 79-year-old man to death while he was cleaning his garden in Hoa Khanh Tay Commune on Thursday. Four other people who were also been stung by bees from the same nest while attending the victim’s funeral on Friday have been hospitalized for emergency treatment.
— Authorities of Ho Chi Minh City have spent nearly VND2 trillion (US$93.5 million) on allowances and gifts to local poor households and other social beneficiaries on the occasion of the past 2015 Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday, the city People’s Committee reported on Friday. This expenditure is 25 percent higher than in the 2014 Tet, the committee said.
— Police in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong are keeping a huge precious piece of rock weighing nearly 30 tons recently excavated by a farmer in Dak Mil District while gardening, local authorities said on Friday. The value of the piece of rock is estimated at dozens of billions of dong (VND1 billion is equivalent to US$47,000). Details related to the piece of rock and how it will be handled will be announced on next Monday, authorities said.

— In a recent report to the Ministry of Transport, the Ho Chi Minh City Transport Department proposed that the ministry work with agencies concerned to clarify and handle activities of the Taxi-booking service Uber, as Uber is operating in the city not in accordance with the content of its investment certificate. Uber is an American taxi app service that offers low fares, expensive vehicles and gives passengers the feeling of riding in their own lavish cars.
— The People Committee of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province in southern Vietnam on Friday granted investment certificates to nine domestic and foreign investors whose total registered capital for their projects are worth VND2.6 trillion (US$121.6 million).
— The Ho Chi Minh City Transport Department has assigned the city’s Center for Management and Operation of Public Passenger Transport to coordinate with agencies concerned to consider piloting an electric bus route in the Phu My Hung urban area in District 7. Such a bus model has previously proposed by Pho Canh Real Estate Management and Trading Co., Ltd., the department said.
