(VOV) – Southeast Asia’s motorcycle crash statistics are staggering and getting worse, creating a disaster for public health as more and more people have started riding motorcycles on already overcrowded and under-engineered roads.
This was the message recently published in the French newspaper Le Courrier International, a Paris based French weekly, in which it warns of the high costs borne by society.
While it may seem enthralling to watch, Asian traffic is a disaster waiting to happen. And unfortunately, it’s getting worse as rising incomes mean more people can afford motorcycles and scooters.
According to the World Bank, traffic accidents cost roughly to 2-3.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for Southeast Asian nation’s collectively due to disability or death.
Recent research indicates 80% of motorcycle helmets in Vietnam alone are deficient and do not meet even minimum safety standards, the paper reported.
