Nhan Dan Online – Work has begun on an aluminium smelting plant in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong with an estimated capacity of 300,000 – 450,000 tonnes of aluminium per year.

Speaking at the ceremony on September 4, Minister of Industry and Trade, Vu Huy Hoang said the smelter was expected to be put into operation at the end of 2016 and generate annual revenue of US$1.3 billion.

The factory, costing a total of more than VND12 trillion (US$564 million) and run by Tran Hong Quan Metallurgy Company, will be an important link between two alumina plants in Dak Nong and Lam Dong provinces and aluminium consumers.

Minister Hoang said this was a project of immense importance to the Central Highlands region, helping boost economic growth by tapping into its potential and advantages.

He said a comprehensive environmental impact assessment had been conducted before the project was given the go-ahead and the smelter would use the most advanced technology.
