South African woman killed in Saigon traffic accident

VietNamNet Bridge – A 24-year-old woman from South Africa was killed when she was hit and swept into the chassis of a tipper truck carrying sand at the intersection of Nguyen Hue and Ton Duc Thang streets in District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday morning, September 27.

At around 0.30am, a dump truck driven by Nguyen Van Hoan, 28, a native of Nghe An province, was travelling on Nguyen Hue Road when it turned left on to Ton Duc Thang Street and collided with the motorcycle driven by Ms. Chani Cawood of South African nationality.



She was swept into the chassis of the dump truck and died on the spot.


“My car was carrying sand to District 2 when the accident occurred. After the incident, I took a taxi motorcycle to the traffic police headquarters in District 1 to declare the case,” said driver Hoan.


The police were immediately present at the site of accident to investigate the cause. By 4 am the same day, the victim’s body and the two vehicles involved in the accident were removed from the scene.


In another accident, on the morning of September 21, a foreign man died after travelling at high speed on a motorbike, crashing into a fast-food outlet at the intersection of Dien Bien Phu and Dinh Tien Hoang streets in Da Kao Ward, District 1, HCM City.
