The monument of the first victory of the Vietnam People’s Navy and the northern militaries was inaugurated in Quang Binh Province’s Ba Don Town on July 29.

The work is located along the bank of Gianh River, aiming to mark the 50 th anniversary of the first victory of the Vietnam People’s Navy and the northern militias (on August 2-5) .
The monument will be a destination for those who need to learn about glorious victories of the Vietnam People’s Navy.
| On August 2, 1964, patrol boats from the Vietnam People’s Navy drove the US destroyer USS Maddox out of Vietnam’s territorial waters in the Bac Bo (Tonkin) Gulf, after repeated US intrusions. The Tonkin Gulf incident prompted US President Lyndon Johnson to escalate the war into northern Vietnam. On August 5, the US airforce carried out more than 100 sorties targeting Vietnam’s naval bases in Quang Binh, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa and Quang Ninh provinces. The raids faced a strong resistance from the Vietnamese naval soldiers and the people, and August 5 has been observed as the traditional day of the Vietnam People’s Navy. (Source: Cpv) |
