The statistics are released as part of a survey on tourists at several tourism destinations conducted by the VNAT and the project management board of an EU-funded tourism development project.

The average spending of international tourists who stay overnight is $102.3 a day, while domestic tourists spend VND1.3 million, or $65 a day, according to the report unveiled on Friday.

Ha Long City, renowned for the iconic Ha Long Bay in the northern province of Quang Ninh, recorded the highest spending of any other destination, $125.1 a day for international travelers and VND1.6 million ($75) a day for local travelers.

In the meantime, the central city of Hue witnessed the lowest spending by global tourists, who spent only $75.6 a day in Vietnam’s imperial capital.

Vietnamese tourists, meanwhile, spent only VND900,000 ($42.36) a day when visiting Hoi An in central Quang Nam Province, known for its famed Old Quarter.

The report is the result of a survey officials from the EU project management board conducted on 1,543 international and local tourists at five tourism spots, including Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, and Sapa, in March and April 2014.

In 2011, the EU began funding the Environmentally and Socially Responsible Tourism Capacity Development Program (ESRT) under an agreement with the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The project was intended to “promote the delivery of environmentally and socially responsible tourism services as part of Vietnam’s tourism sector strategy,” according to the ESRT website.
