Photos taken by ethnic kids exhibited in Vietnam capital

120 photos taken by kids of ethnic minorities are on exhibit in Hanoi until June 8.

The photos, taken by 49 kids of Mong, M’Nong, Cham and Raglai ethnic minorities in northern Lao Cai, Central Highlands Dak Nong and central Ninh Thuan provinces, are on exhibit at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (Nguyen Van Huyen, Cau Giay District).

With the cameras borrowed from the program organizers, the kids, from their fourth to eighth grades, tell various stories through the photos they took of their family members and others around them.

The exhibit, “To ke ban nghe” (Let me tell you my stories) is jointly held by Oxfam in Vietnam and the Institute for Studies of Society, Economics and Environment (iSEE).

“With the simple cameras in the photovoice approach, which encourages kids to make their voices heard through photos, the kids have showcased their keen observation and surprising life perspectives,” Hoang Huy Thanh, from iSEE, noted.

“The exhibit also proves kids’ ability to understand serious matters as well their efforts to tackle them, which are often taken for granted by us adults,” stressed Le Kim Dung, from Oxfam.

After the exhibit closes in Hanoi, it will be taken to the kids’ hometowns, Lao Cai, Dak Nong and Ninh Thuan provinces, in July and August 2014.
