4,000-year-old ceramics on exhibit in Vietnam capital

Seventy-five artifacts spanning the 4,000-year-old development of Vietnam’s ceramic craft are on exhibit in Hanoi until August 2014.

The exhibit, running at the National History Museum, 1 Trang Tien, Hoan Kiem District, features antiques made from a variety of materials including spongy ceramic, terracotta and porcelain.

They were used as decorative items in everyday life, architecture and religions back to 4,000 years ago.

Highlights include statues of Buddha, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (Goddess of Mercy) and Sangha in different manifestations.

On exhibit are also statues of folk deities such as the Gods of Kitchen and God of the Soil, along with statues of sacred animals including dragons and kylins, which were typically fixed onto roofs, gateways to palaces, pagodas, temples, villages and tombs for decorative and religious purposes.

The museum management also showed off its new logo and automatic demonstration system on this occasion.
