Vietnamese shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh, 40, broke a world record at the International Shooting Sport Federation’s Rifle and Pistol World Cup currently taking place in Fort Benning in the U.S.


Vinh won the gold medal with 202.8 points after 20 bullets, smashing the current world record of 202.3 points held by Chinese shooter Pang Wei, at the event currently running from March 26 to April 3.

He was followed by two Russians, Sergey Chervyakovskiy with 202.3 points and Vladimir Gontcharov with 181.3 points.


Another Vietnamese shooter, Tran Quoc Cuong, ranked seventh at the event with 96.5 points.


Vinh could only beat his rival Chervyakovskiy after the seventh burst of fire.


The Vietnamese shooter scored 10.2 and 9.9 points to add up to 162.0 points while the Russian scored 8.6 and 10.2 for a total of 161.6 points.


Vinh remained in the leading position after the last two bursts of fire to secure his victory.


Vinh has become the second Vietnamese shooter to break a world record.


His fellow Vietnamese shooter Tran Oanh did so at the world shooting event organized in 1962 in Plzen, of the former Czechchoslovakia.


Oanh scored 587 points in the men’s pistol category, breaking the former record of 586 points by a U.S. shooter.
