Binh Dinh works to make it more popular among tourists <div> <div><span>The sea off the coast of Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province (Photo: VNA)</span></div> <p><strong>Binh Dinh (VNA)</strong> – The central province of Binh Dinh welcomed more than 4 million tourists in 2018, up 10.6 percent from last year, and it is still making efforts to become a destination of more holiday makers in the time ahead.</p> <p>Among visitors to Binh Dinh, there were over 286,400 foreigners and 3.8 million domestic holiday makers, respectively rising by 8.3 percent and 10.8 percent.</p> <p>The province recorded a surge of almost 55 percent in tourism revenue to reach 3.3 trillion VND (142.1 million USD), according to Director of the provincial Tourism Department Nguyen Van Dung.</p> <p>He attributed the tourist number increase partly to the improved infrastructure and services at accommodation facilities. Additionally, many two- or three-star hotels and resorts have been put into operation this year.</p> <p>Binh Dinh is stepping up attracting investment in tourism infrastructure, the official said, noting that provincial authorities have given permission to 26 tourism projects, including nine hotels, 15 tourist areas, one safari park and one soft skill training centre.</p> <p>Some major projects have become operational, including the Nhon Ly resort, villa and entertainment complex of the FLC Group; the Trung Luong camping site and Crown Retreat Quy Nhon Resort of the Trung Hoi Tourism Co. Ltd; and Huong Viet Hotel.</p> <p>They have given a facelift to Binh Dinh and promoted its standing in the tourism industry of Vietnam, he added.</p> <p>The province aims to welcome 5.1 million tourist arrivals in 2019, up 25 percent from this year, and earn 6.5 trillion VND from the industry.</p> <p>To that end, promotion activities will be enhanced while priorities will be given to bettering tourism infrastructure and services, Dung noted, adding that Binh Dinh is also working to boost community-based tourism in some coastal areas of Quy Nhon city and develop human resources in the sector.</p> <p>Binh Dinh is rich in cultural and historical traditions and boasts many scenic sites along its 134km-long coast.</p> <p>Notably, Quy Nhon city has diverse terrain including plain land, hills, mountains, rivers, lakes, sea and islands. Thua Thien-Hue to have one more five-star tourist complex <div> <div><span>The ceremony starting the construction of the Minh Vien – Lang Co complex in Phu Loc district (Photo: thoidai.com.vn) </span></div> <p><strong>Thua Thien – Hue (VNA)</strong> – Construction of a 368 million USD tourist complex has started at Chan May – Lang Co economic zone in Phu Loc district, the central province of Thua Thien – Hue, with its first phase slated to become operational at the end of 2019.</p> <p>The Minh Vien – Lang Co complex will house hotels, a resort, a conference hall and support facilities all at five-star standards on 102 ha of land.</p> <p>The entire complex is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2024.</p> <p>Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Phan Ngoc Tho said the new tourism site is expected to help attract more visitors to the Lang Co Bay and Thua Thien – Hue province.</p> <p>The Chan May – Lang Co economic zone has so far attracted 43 investment projects with total capital of nearly 40 trillion VND (1.72 billion USD). In 2018 alone, the zone’s management board granted investment licences to 18 projects operating in industry, tourism, industrial park infrastructure, non-tariff areas and urban areas with 5 trillion VND in total capital.  </p> <p>Several big foreign investors have come to the zone to seek investment opportunities, including J.W from the Republic of Korea which is interested in infrastructure and automobile part production. 2018 – Successful year for Vietnam’s tourism industry <div> <div> <div><span>A corner of Van Don island district of Quang Ninh province (Photo: VNA)</span></div> </div> <div><strong>Hanoi (VNA) –</strong> The arrival of the 15 millionth foreign visitor of 2018 in Ha Long city, in the northern province of Quang Ninh, marks a successful year for the tourism industry. <p>This year, the country is estimated to serve some 15.5 million-15.6 million foreign tourists and 80 million domestic travellers, generating 620 trillion VND (26.66 billion USD) in tourism revenue.</p> <p>The number of international tourist arrivals surged three-fold from 5 million in 2010 to over 15 million in 2018. The remarkable growth reflects the great efforts made by all players in the sector, particularly the large network of local travel agencies and strategic tourism investors nationwide.</p> <p>The success has also been attributed to the large-scale and intensified efforts of tourism authorities to promote the country overseas. To aid such efforts, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) has adopted a system of indicators to evaluate a destination and a tourism code of conduct; designed various plans to strengthen the management of travel agencies and tour guides; and raised awareness of the importance of quality among tourism service providers, local administrations, and tourism authorities.</p> <p>According to the VNAT, to meet the demands of visitors from different markets, Vietnam has developed a diverse range of tourism products that make use of the country’s advantages, including cultural tours, sea-based tours, eco-tours, adventure tours, luxurious resort vacations, and more.</p> <p>In recent years, a range of popular holiday destinations like Ha Long, Phu Quoc, and Da Nang have helped develop the popular imagery of Vietnam, promoting the national tourism among international visitors and becoming the main drivers of the industry’s growth.</p> <p>Also this year, the country has won a series of international awards, recognising it as a safe and friendly destination. Vietnam was named the “Asia’s Leading Destination” for the first time at the 2018 World Travel Awards in Hong Kong this September. Two months later, it was honoured with the title of “Asia’s best golf destination in 2018” at the Golf World Travel Awards.</p> <p>In 2019, Vietnam expects to welcome some 103 million visitors, including around 18 million foreigners and 85 million domestic travellers, up 15 percent and 6 percent, respectively, from 2018.</p> <p>Early December, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc approved the establishment of a state-run tourism development fund, worth about 300 billion VND (12.9 million USD), which will be used for building plans, financing tourism promotion activities, and boosting the tourism growth.</p> <p>The PM has also given nod to a project which looks to restructure the industry in an attempt to turn it into a spearhead economic sector and make Vietnam one of the most developed tourism nations in Southeast Asia.</p> <p>The project has set a target of 45 billion USD in tourism revenue by 2025, with exports through tourism reaching 27 billion USD.</p> <p>The sector is hoped to contribute more than 10 percent to GDP and create 6 million jobs, including 2 million direct jobs. The growth has continued as more domestic and international flights have been launched.</p> <p>ACV has planned to boost investment and upgrade of airport infrastructure in the coming time, focusing on major hubs such as Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province.</p> <p>Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat, Danang, Cam Ranh, Cat Bi, Vinh and Phu Bai airports are all expanding capacity. Tourists to Binh Thuan likely to number 40,000 during New Year holidays <div> <div> <p>Tourists visit Poshanu Cham Tower in Phan Thiet city (Photo: VNA)</p> </div> <p><strong><br /> Binh Thuan (VNA) –</strong> The south central coastal province of Binh Thuan expects to welcome 40,000 visitors during the New Year holidays, which runs from December 29 to January 1.</p> <p>Besides foreign tourists from Russia, the Republic of Korea, Germany and Finland, the province is forecast to host a large number of domestic travellers who come for camping and organising year-end parties.</p> <p>In a bid to ensure safety for holidaymakers, the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has enhanced inspections on tourism service activities, particularly in key tourist sites like Mui Ne, La Gi and Ham Thuan Nam. Also, it has strictly controlled food safety and environmental hygiene.</p> <p>Furthermore, due attention has been paid to social order at historical relic sites and many other places. (Photo: AFP)</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>A statement by the public prosecutor’s office said 11 other tourists from Vietnam and an Egyptian bus driver were wounded when the homemade device exploded.</p> <p>The improvised explosive device was placed near a wall along the Mariyutiya Street in Al-Haram district near the Giza Pyramids, it said.</p> <p>The bus was carrying a total of 16 people including 14 Vietnamese tourists, an Egyptian driver and a tour guide, according to the statement.</p> <p>Armed security personnel quickly deployed to the site and cordoned off the area for inspection.</p> <p>The white tourist bus could be seen with its windows shattered and surrounded by soot-covered debris.</p> <p>Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli visited the injured tourists in hospital, where he announced that the tour guide had died from his wounds.</p> <p>Madbouli urged against “amplifying” the incident as he insisted that “no country in the world can guarantee that its 100 per cent safe”.</p> <p>“It’s possible at times that an individual incident takes place here or there,” he told journalists.</p> <p>“We have to know that it’s possible that it would be repeated in the future.”</p> <p>There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.</p> <p>Later, a statement issued by the United States condemning the attack.</p> <p>“We stand with all Egyptians in the fight against terrorism and support the Egyptian government in bringing the perpetrators of this attack to justice,” State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said.</p> <p><strong>TOURISM STRUGGLING</strong></p> <p>Egypt’s tourism industry has been struggling to recover from terror attacks and domestic instability that has hit the country in recent years.</p> <p>In July 2017, two German tourists were stabbed to death by a suspected jihadist assailant at the Egyptian Red Sea beach resort of Hurgada.</p> <p>In October 2015, a bomb claimed by a local affiliate of the Islamic State group killed 224 people on board a passenger jet carrying Russian tourists over the Sinai peninsula.</p> <p>That incident dealt a severe blow to Egypt’s tourism industry still reeling from the turmoil set off by the 2011 uprising that forced veteran leader Hosni Mubarak from power.</p> <p>Egypt has since been seeking to lure tourists back and spur the lucrative sector by touting new archaeological discoveries and bolstering security around archaeological sites and in airports.</p> <p>Tourism has slowly started picking up. We will also strengthen co-operation with Khanh Hoa and neighbouring provinces to create a regional tourism network,” he said.</p> <p>The opening ceremony will be held in May along with a week-long sea festival. Highlights of the Tourism Year programme include the Miss Universe Vietnam 2019 contest, the Symphony of the Sea festival, a film screening week, a seafood festival and the Miss Tourism ASEAN contest.</p> <p>Various sport events will be held such as the KN Golf Championship, Vibe Marathon Nha Trang, Challenge Vietnam, the Hong Kong – Nha Trang yacht race and a jet ski race.</p> <p>Security and service quality are two urgent problems authorities are trying to address, said Tran Viet Trung, Director of the provincial Department of Tourism.</p> <p>“We tightened management of travel agencies and accommodation providers to ensure good service,” Trung said. “We also set up hotlines to receive feedback and complaints from tourists.”</p> <p>There are nearly 40,000 rooms in the province to serve increasing demand during the festivals.</p> <p>“Cam Ranh Airport has been improved to prevent overloading,” he said.</p> <p>The province received 6.3 million tourists, including 2.8 million foreigners, during 2018. Its target is to welcome 8.5 million tourists, including 3.5 million foreigners, in 2020, and to earn 70 trillion VND (3 billion USD) in tourism revenue.</p> <p>Nguyen Van Dung, Director of the Binh Dinh Department of Tourism, said Khanh Hoa province should also promote regional and national tourism during the National Tourism Year.</p> <p>“We expect the programme will boost tourism in the central coastal provinces including Binh Dinh and Phu Yen – localities with beautiful destinations and unique cultural heritage.”</p> <p>The National Tourism Year 2019 in Nha Trang is expected to receive seven million tourists, said Trung.</p> <p>Nha Trang has 180 kilometres of coastline with beautiful landscapes of Van Phong, Nha Trang and Cam Ranh bays and many islands. Hanoi taps community-based tourism potential <div> <div><span>Tourists walk into a house in Duong Lam ancient village (Photo: VNA)</span></div> <p><strong>Hanoi (VNA) –</strong> Community-based tourism is considered a new way to attract more tourists to Hanoi, which covers a large suburban area with enticing local lifestyle and culture.</p> <p>A number of localities in the capital city have already engaged in the homestay trend, including Duong Lam ancient village in Son Tay town, Dao Thuc water puppetry village in Dong Anh district, Lai Xa photography village in Hoai Duc district, and Ba Vi district.</p> <p>For example, located just 50km to the Northwest of Hanoi, Duong Lam, recognised as a national heritage area, has been a magnet for both domestic and foreign visitors for its well preserved ancient houses and rich culture and history typical of the northern delta region.</p> <p>The combination of agriculture and tourism has helped villagers find another source of income apart from their crops, all while providing tourists with a unique experience. In the past, since there were not many overnight accommodations available in Duong Lam, visitors often opted for short day trips. However, these days many local families have opened their doors to strangers for a home-stay experience. An overnight stay is exactly what people need to fully enjoy what the village has to offer. They can spend the day working with farmers and joining their daily activities.</p> <p>Residents of Ba Vi district have also reaped benefits from community-based tourism.</p> <p>Dinh Thi Hao has provided home-stay services at her house in the local Ba Trai commune for three years, treating customers to home grown and cooked food as well as farming experiences. She hosts between 20 and 50 guests per month, with earnings from this work up to 10 times higher than the income from her tea farm.</p> <p>Meanwhile, Ba Vi commune at the foot of a mountain of the same name, where 80 percent of the population know traditional herbal medicines, has developed a series of tourism services, particularly a bathing service using traditional herbs of Dao ethnic people. Increasing popularity of the Dao bathing service has helped many families of the ethnic community escape poverty.</p> <p>Hanoi’s community-based tourism, however, lacks investment in professional service supply for its sustainable growth. As a result, the revenue it brings to communities still falls short of potential. Encouraging the participation of enterprises in the model can help equipped households with better tourism knowledge and business management skills.</p> <p>The capital city welcomed 5.74 million foreign visitors in 2018, up 16 percent against 2017, among 26 million tourists spending time in the city. US warns travellers over security at Manila airport <div> <p>The United States has warned its citizens that security at the Philippines’s main airport does not meet international standards, urging travellers to exercise “increased caution”.</p> <div> <div> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila has previously been voted the world’s worst airport AFP/NOEL CELIS</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>The US Department of Homeland Security issued a travel advisory on Wednesday (Dec 26) saying security at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport was not “consistent” with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.</p> <p>“Exercise increased caution when traveling to or from Ninoy Aquino International Airport,” the US embassy in Manila said on its website citing the advisory.</p> <p>The advisory was based on an assessment by security experts from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the US homeland security department said without specifying the findings.</p> <p>Once derided as the world’s worst airport due to leaking toilets and creaking facilities, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport is the primary gateway to the Southeast Asian nation.</p> <p>A statement on the US homeland security department website said that the agency had directed airlines issuing tickets for travel between the two nations to notify passengers of the assessment.</p> <p>It added that TSA representatives have been working with the Philippine government “assist airport and transportation authorities in bringing (the Manila airport) up to international security standards”.</p> <p>Manila International Airport general manager Ed Monreal said on Thursday the Philippines would adhere to international aviation security standards.</p> <p>“All points raised by the transportation security administration TSA auditors have either been addressed or are in the process of being addressed,” Monreal told reporters, adding that Manila airport was “very, very safe”.</p> <p>Monreal said TSA auditors were in the Philippines in September and had observed that the Manila airport had some gates with faulty locks while security checkpoints were inconsistent.</p> <p>He added the Philippines had hired additional guards and would procure x-ray machines to comply with the TSA recommendations.</p> <p>The Manila airport topped the list of worst airports on the travel website “The Guide to Sleeping in Airports” from 2011-2013, causing the government to make major renovations.</p> <p>The airport is notorious for flight delays and its security personnel had faced allegations of extorting money from passengers.</p> <p>In 2013, a gunman opened fire outside the airport, killing four people including a town mayor. Seventy electricity boxes on Trang Thi, Hang Khay, and Trang Tien streets will be painted with different flowers that bloom around the year in Hanoi.</p> <p>A city beautification project approved by the People’s Committee of Hoan Kiem District is being carried out by Hanoi Art Space.</p> <p>Thuc, one of the artists working on the beautification project is about to finish his painting on a box at the junction of Trang Thi and Hang Khay streets. It took him an afternoon to do it.</p> <p>“The pictures on the electricity boxes make the streets look livelier. I come from Beaumont, Texas, and the artists there also do street artwork like this, but in different themes,” said Daniel (pictured above), an American tourist as he walked past one adorned with sunflowers on Trang Thi Street.</p> <p>An artist paints chrysanthemums in front of the police headquarters in Hoan Kiem District.</p> <p>One project participant said: “Before painting, we had to look into the location to choose the appropriate theme and colors to match the surrounding space. We also have to clean the electricity box’s surface to ensure that the paint sticks.”</p> <p>This electricity box at 15 Trang Thi Street has been painted with purple and blue flowers.</p> <p>Nguyen Thu Tra, a resident of Hanoi’s Thuong Tin District, said: “I think the paintings are very beautiful. Electricity boxes in Hanoi are often defaced with graffiti and advertisement leaflets. This project makes the city more colorful.”</p> <p>Manh, an artist, spraying paints to create more highlights for his painting of hibiscus flowers at the intersection of Trang Thi and Quang Trung streets.</p> <p>This box is quite large compared to the others, so it took Manh a whole day to complete his painting.</p> <p>An artwork near the Viet Duc hospital on Trang Thi Street depicts a common wild flower.</p> <p>All the electricity boxes on Trang Thi Street have been painted. Measures to remove obstacles in tourism infrastructure <div> <p><b><i>Has tourism’s growth reached the threshold?</i></b></p> <p>The annual growth rate of international visitors travelling to Vietnam has reached 30% over the past three years and the tourism sector is contributing 7.5% to the country’s GDP. Vietnam ranked sixth among the top ten fastest growing destinations in the world in 2017 and attracted US$15 billion of foreign direct investment (FDI) to tourism by the end of last year, creating jobs for over two million people. However, the Vietnamese tourism sector should make essential changes to avoid hitting the threshold.</p> <p>In 2017, Vietnam welcomed nearly 13 million international tourists, earning US$8.3 billion. By the end of 2018, the number reached over 15 million. However, compared to Singapore (US$18.4 billion) and Thailand (US$52.5 billion), this figure is very low, not commensurate with the potential of the country. Each foreign visitor to Vietnam spent an average of only US$900 per trip, while the spending in Thailand was US$1,565 per trip. This situation showed that, although Vietnam has great potential in tourism and this industry has strongly developed, the level of tourism development still lagged behind many countries in the region. The general director of a travel company specialising in serving European tourists said that his company did not dare to bring visitors to Sa Pa because the number of tourists was too large, while the tourism infrastructure in the destination does not meet their demand.</p> <p>Disadvantages of accommodation infrastructure are obvious. Hanoi now has 67 luxury hotels with over 10,000 rooms. In 2017, the capital city welcomed 4.9 million international visitors and nearly 19 million domestic tourists. There are 641 operating hotels in Ho Chi Minh City, including 10 five-star and 26 four-star hotels. All of them are always operating at full capacity.Meanwhile, the number of hotels in other attractive destinations, such as Nha Trang, Da Nang and Phu Quoc, is very limited. In order to serve a large number of visitors, particularly foreigners, tourism infrastructure must be always ready and qualified.</p> <p>Addressing the Summit, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said that the Vietnamese tourism sector has reached very fast growth, but it is extremely difficult to maintain this speed. Because, when reaching a certain threshold, the tourism sector and other industries have to face challenges that can’t be solved in one or two years, such as aviation and airport infrastructure.</p> <p><b><i>Measures to remove difficulties in infrastructure</i></b></p> <p>Under a project to restructure tourism that was approved by the Prime Minister on December 5, the sector set a target of having total revenue of US$45 billion from tourists, earning US$27 billion of export value through tourism, and contributing over 10% to the GDP, as well as creating jobs for six million people, thereby increasing the rate of direct workers who are trained in and foster professional skills to 70%, as well as receiving and serving 30-32 million international visitors and over 130 million domestic tourists.</p> <p>According to Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Quang Tung, the project was developed by the Ministry and received close consultation from the business community. It focuses on restructuring the market and the development of human resources. The Government has frankly pointed out the shortcomings and limitations in the tourism, including a lack of synchronisation in infrastructure, weak human resources, low capacity of management of destinations, and tourism development not being associated with environmental protection. However, the specific methods in the implementation of basic solutions as well as the coordination among tourism agencies around the country will be key issues in the future.</p> <p>Regarding the growth of international visitors by 2025, Executive Chairman of Grant Thornton Vietnam Auditing and Consulting Kenneth Atkinson said that the ‘bottleneck’ ininfrastructure is hindering the development of Vietnamese tourism. John Lindquist, a global tourism expert and senior advisor of the Boston Consulting Group stressed that, in order to make breakthrough in tourism development, it is crucial to loosen the policy of granting visas to visitors, enhance traffic connections and strengthen investment in airport infrastructure. Activities and events during the year will introduce local sea and island tourism, Huong emphasized.</p> <p>Compared to other central coastal provinces, Khanh Hoa holds great potential for tourism development, especially sea and island tourism. The province has 385km of coastline and about 200 big and small islands, with stunning natural landscapes such as Van Phong, Nha Trang and Cam Ranh bays listed among the world’s most beautiful. It also has many beautiful beaches, with white sand, blue sea, and a temperate climate, as well as many exciting festivals such as the Ponagar Temple festival, a whale worshipping festival, and the salanganes nest festival.</p> <p>The locality currently has 690 lodging facilities with more than 32,000 rooms, including 108 three- to five-star hotels with over 18,000 rooms. In addition, Khanh Hoa has modern road, railway, aviation and waterway infrastructure. More than 20 carriers operate out of Cam Ranh International Airport, providing direct flights that create favorable conditions for international tourism.</p> <p>During the 2012-2017 period, the number of tourists grew exponentially from 2.3 million in 2012 to 5.5 million in 2017. By November 2018, Khanh Hoa Province had 61 travel companies, 17 branches, and two representative offices of international travel companies. It had also granted 787 international and 397 domestic guide cards. In 2018, the province is expected to welcome more than 6.3 million visitors, an increase of 15 percent compared to a year ago, including 2.8 million foreigners. Total tourism revenues are forecast to reach VND20.5 trillion.</p> <p>China, Russia and the Republic of Korea are currently the largest visitor-generating markets for Khanh Hoa’s tourism. Although the number of tourists to the province has increased, especially international visitors, tourist spending remains at a low level.</p> <p>Permanent Deputy Chairman of the Khanh Hoa People’s Committee Tran Son Hai said tourism is considered a spearhead economic sector in local socioeconomic development. In 2019, Khanh Hoa plans to welcome more than seven million visitors, including over three million foreigners. Hanoi welcomed about 28 million visitors, including 5.5 million international tourists.</p> <p>Notably, the northern province of Quang Ninh emerged as an attractive new destination this year. (Photo: VNA)</span></div> <p><strong>Hanoi (VNS/VNA) –</strong> The emerging mass tourism in coastal provinces in recent years has destroyed natural beauty spots at a furious pace. And in the next five years, Vietnam may lose all tourism resources.</p> <p>The stark warning came from Vu The Binh, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association, at a recent conference.</p> <p>Cua Dai beach in Hoi An town, the central province of Quang Nam, for example, has gradually lost its attraction to Western tourists due to salt intrusion.</p> <p>Many now choose An Bang beach or Ha My beach instead, but that beach is also showing signs of subsidence.</p> <p>Cua Dai beach erosion is caused by the lack of mud and soil running from the upstream.</p> <p>Professor Nguyen Kim Dan said that the construction of hydropower plant dams and illegal sand mining on Thu Bon river, the mother river of Quang Nam province, also contributes to the shortage of mud.</p> <p>Too many resorts built on the shore block the supply of sand to the beach, making Cua Dai gradually disappear.</p> <p>Mui Ne beach in the southern central province of Ninh Thuan, once featured in top ten beautiful beaches in Asia-Pacific, is now facing similar problems.</p> <p>From fully booked years ago, “the resort land” of Mui Ne has seen a decline in the number of visitors.</p> <p>On most popular booking sites like, Agoda or Tripadvisor, many travelers have left negative feedbacks for the beach saying it has lost its original charm.</p> <p>At present, according to Binh, only two southern central provinces of Ninh Thuan and Phu Yen still have tourism resources.</p> <p>“These provinces should take time and not rush to invest into beach tourism. As a follower, Ninh Thuan province needs to be aware of other localities’ failures and be careful in planning and choosing investors,” he said.</p> <p>Right after Bai Kem in Phu Quoc Island was named in top 100 most beautiful beaches in the world by the Canada-based Flight Network and the island aimed to become Vietnam’s special economic zone, local beaches have started being divided into areas to build tourism spots.</p> <p>However, many of these constructions are illegal. Earlier this year, Phu Quoc Island Urban Security Surveillance Team found 650 cases of violating regulations of construction.</p> <p>According to Vietnam Association of Realtors, in the first three months of 2018, the price for one sq.m of land on Phu Quoc Island’s central street of Tran Hung Dao rose almost threefold, set at 100 million VND (4,300 USD).</p> <p>Nguyen Tan Phong, deputy director of Phu Quoc District Land Registration Office, said they received 1,000 dossiers asking for acquiring land use right certificates each month.</p> <p>Binh Chau commune in Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, which has been long considered as the “green lung” of the southeast region is now being targeted by investors.</p> <p>The land price has been rising dramatically from 400-500 million VND (17,200-21,500 USD) for 100sq.m to 600-700 million VND (25,800-30,100 USD) in the past few months.</p> <p>Tran Van Nguyen, a Canadian-Vietnamese investor, said it was easy to earn huge profits after a short period of time by investing into real estate projects in Vietnam’s new tourism spots.</p> <p>He quoted by Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper, as saying: “Local authorities roll out the red carpets for investors and we almost reserve all rights on the areas we buy. In other countries, not to mention projects affecting environment, even a normal construction needs authorities’ approvals of structure, functions and environmental impacts.”</p> <p>Beautiful landscapes, convenient services and flocks of visitors have become a common formula of Vietnam tourism for years.</p> <p>Only until many natural landscapes started being destroyed, did people realise their impacts on environment and discuss sustainable tourism.</p> <p>Dao Dang Cong Trung, 40, in the coastal city of Da Nang, who has picked up trash on Son Tra Peninsula, said mass tourism is affecting the local ecosystem.</p> <p>Some monkeys living in the peninsula have formed a habit of finding food in the trash tourists throw away and not in the forest anymore.</p> <p>He warned that without tighter management, Son Tra may become the second Cua Dai beach in the near future, suffering the severe damage and never restoring its original beauty.</p> <p>“It is impossible to say the national tourism is developing when only referring to the number of tourists. Most of tourism agencies have not paid much attention in preserving and protecting the nature’s gifts. Vietnam aims to lure 18 million foreign tourists in 2019 <div> <div><span>Foreign tourists at Trang An tourist site in Ninh Binh (Photo: VNA)</span></div> <p><strong>Hanoi (VNA)</strong> – Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien has asked the tourism sector to work harder to attract 18 million foreign tourists in 2019.</p> <p>The target was set at a recent conference to review the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism’s performance in 2018 and sketch out its plans for 2019.</p> <p>Thien requested the sector to focus on tourism promotion in major markets, thus luring more travellers from these markets and ensuring the growth in the number of visitors.</p> <p>In 2018, the Vietnamese tourism sector enjoyed impressive results with a record 15.6 million international tourists and 80 million domestic travellers.
