Bamboo Airways officially granted aviation business licence

More than one year after applying for a business licence, domestic real estate giant FLC Group’s Bamboo Airways airline has been officially granted the aviation business license for the duration of 50 years from July 9, 2018.

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has just signed the decision approving FLC’s Bamboo Airways airline project in Phu Cat Airport (the central province of Binh Dinh). The VND700 billion ($30.8 million) project is developed by Viet Bamboo Airlines Company Limited.

FLC stated that Bamboo Airways will focus on international routes from Northeast Asia, such as Japan, South Korea, and China, to Vietnamese tourist destinations in Quy Nhon (Binh Dinh), the northern province of Quang Ninh, and the central provinces of Thanh Hoa and Khanh Hoa’s Nha Trang. In the future, the airline will expand routes to the US and Europe.

In the country, Bamboo Airways also develops routes connecting tourist destinations, including Thanh Hoa-Quy Nhon, Thanh Hoa-Phu Quoc, and Thanh Hoa-Nha Trang.

Previously, despite not having been granted a business license, FLC reached a $8.6 billion agreement with US-based Boeing Company and French Airbus Group to buy 44 airplanes, which is a sizeable fleet as Jetstar has 19 airplanes and Vietjet has 47.

At the time of signing with Boeing Company, the Washington Post quoted aerospace analyst Richard Aboulafia stated: “You can lose an awful lot of money in the airline business. You are putting all your eggs in one basket, and exposing yourself to an awful lot of expense and debt. But if you are working in a controlled economy, it might just work out for you.”
