HCMC – Taiwan sees strong potential for boosting medical cooperation with Vietnam, especially in medical tourism and supply of medical equipment for Vietnamese hospitals, said Angela Chang, director of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council.

Speaking on the sidelines of an exhibition on Taiwan’s general healthcare held in HCMC from July 25 to 29, Chang said more Vietnamese patients have traveled to Singapore, Thailand, China and Taiwan for medical treatment. There were up to 2,000 Vietnamese traveling to Taiwan in 2015 for medical treatment, she said.

This is a great opportunity for Taiwan’s healthcare sector to get more customers from Vietnam, especially when medical cost in Taiwan is just about one-fifth of those in Western countries.

In addition, investment in medical projects in Vietnam is another sphere of strong potential.

In Vietnam, one hospital invested by Taiwan’s Shingmark Enterprise is being built in Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province. The Shing Mark Hospital has been constructed since 2013 with an initial investment of VND6.4 trillion.

After completion, the nine-floor hospital will have 1,500 beds and cover an area of 87,000 square meters. The first 150 beds are ready and the hospital is officially opened for patients from now.

Some Taiwanese specialists in the healthcare sector believe Vietnam is in high demand for healthcare investment in the future, and therefore, Taiwan will boost investment in the medical sector in Vietnam and some others in the region.

Many Taiwanese experts said they were shocked to witness overload at Vietnamese hospitals, especially public ones. There are cases in which four patients share a bed at Vietnam hospitals, leading to cross-infections among patients.

In the time to come, Taiwan will support Vietnam’s healthcare through training workshops. Many Taiwan firms specializing in medical equipment also want to find partners in Vietnam to distribute smart medical equipment and develop smart healthcare systems.
