Director of the park’s management board, Le Thanh Tinh confirmed with the Nguoi Lao Dong (Workers) Newspaper on February 26 that the three tourists included one US man, Dee Smith, 34, and two French nationals, Jeremy Lalonde, 29, and Christophe Voisin, 31.

According to a report from the park’s management board, they found the three tourists while they were following the Rao Thuong- En Cave route in the national park at around 9.30 on February 24.

The tourists failed to show their tickets for the site and so were fined basing on the park’s regulations, the report said.

Tinh said that after being fined, the three tourists said they also wanted to explore the Son Doong Cave themselves but were prevented.

“These tourists might not be aware of the danger they may face while exploring the caves on their own here,” Tinh said. “So besides giving fines, we’re trying to provide more information about the destinations, tours, and trips here and updated regulations to visitors.”

The World Heritage Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is famous for its karst mountains, underground rivers, unspoilt jungles, and especially dozens of extensive caves including the world’s biggest Son Doong.
