According to International Living correspondent Wendy Justice, Vietnam “remains an extraordinarily inexpensive place to live”.
In major urban centres, retirees can rent furnished, two-bedroom apartments for US$500 per month, and comparable properties for US$350 to US$400 a month in beach towns.
Wendy also noted that Vietnam has become a popular destination in Southeast Asia for both expats and tourists.
Rounding the list of top 5 include Cambodia, Nicaragua, Peru, and Colombia.
International Living based its rankings on the following criteria: the cost of residential property rentals, return plane tickets to the US, groceries, clothing, telecommunications, movie theatre tickets, restaurants, gym memberships, and domestic travel.
