Vietnamese summer film festival in Hanoi

The films cover a broad range of styles, periods and subjects, from Vietnamese classic to modern French documentary, but all have one thing in common; they show the strength, beauty and resilience of the Vietnamese people.

The five categories are:

  1. The Quiet American starring Audie Murphy (centre)

Foreign feature films about Vietnam. Films include the Academy Award winning Indochine, The Lover, the original version of The Quiet American, Silence of the Rice Fields and Casualties of War.

  2. Vietnamese feature films. These include Living in Fear, the story of a man disabling landmines, When the Tenth Month Comes, (considered by many critics to be one of the greatest Vietnamese films ever made), Nostalgia for the Countryside, The Traveling Circus, The Gamble and The Deserted Valley.
  3. Award-winning foreign documentaries about Vietnam, such as Hearts and Minds, Regret to Inform (a powerful award-winning story of a wife’s journey), A Dream in Hanoi, Public Enemy Number One, The 17th Parallel and Prisoners in the Hanoi Hilton.
  4. Vietnamese documentaries. Includes Story from the Corner of a Park, Lua’s Story, Why is there no Moon in the Daytime, Sweet Home, Suburbs of Hanoi, Letter from the Waves, Steep Climb and The Rocky Highland.

The fifth category, brand new for a film festival of this kind, is a section for films made by students. At each of these screenings, seven short films by Vietnam’s future filmmakers will be shown, giving filmgoers the opportunity to see the early works of some of Vietnam’s extremely talented young filmmakers.

All films will be screened in their original versions, with English subtitles. Some have Vietnamese audio available. Sessions are 6 and 8 pm on weekdays and 2, 4, 6 and 8 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The timetable has been designed to allow most filmgoers the chance to view all the films in the festival if they wish.

The Manager of Cinemateque, Gerry Herman, hopes that many tourists visiting Hanoi, as well as foreign and Vietnamese residents of the city and current members of Cinemateque, will enjoy the selection of films and the opportunity to witness the depth of film talent both here and overseas, that has focussed on Vietnam, both past and present.

If you would like to view the full program, look for one of the beautifully produced black and white brochures being distributed around Hanoi, or email Cinemateque at info@hanoicinema.org

To locate the cinema, find the alley behind the sign “Hotel des Artistes” at 22A Hai Ba Trung Street, wind your way past the bikes and turn right then left into the courtyard. There is a bar and restaurant where you can meet your friends before the movie starts.
