In recently released statistics, the Ministry reports that more than 3.7 million international and 20 million domestic travelers flocked to Vietnam over the past five months, generating total revenue of VND109,160 billion.
Although China has accounted for roughly 25% of the total number of international travelers to Vietnam over recent years and the number of Chinese visitors has taken a nose-dive, directly resulting from the East Sea turmoil, the uptick in foreign arrivals from other countries are more than offsetting the decline.
Additionally, official statistics show that, each Chinese visitor on average has historically spent about US$500 per day, while tourists from other countries spend more than two-fold that amount at US$1,200per day. The increased revenues from non-Chinese travelers sufficiently compensates for any reduction in revenue from China.
In the wake of the East Sea tensions, the State Steering Board for Tourism has stepped-up information dissemination programmes, redrawn up risk management plans, and expanded overseas markets.
The Board has proactively initiated measures to stimulate domestic demand, help tourism businesses iron out snags, and ensure absolute safety and security for tourists while requesting all localities and businesses refrain from discriminating against Chinese enterprises or visitors.
Addressing a tourism conference on May 29, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam urged the tourism sector to exert every effort to fulfill its set target in spite of economic difficulties amid the complicated international situation.
He asked the industry to strictly follow its motto “safe, friendly, and quality” and fight negative phenomena such as overcharging and smuggling.
The local tourism sector plans to boost external information dissemination to introduce Vietnam’s image to ASEAN countries, as well as other markets in Russia and the Middle East.
The sector is fostering cooperation in the Philippines and some international cruise ship agencies and diligently using its best efforts in an attempt to penetrate such promising markets as Eastern Europe, Japan, and the Republic of Korea and maintain a steady course on the road to sustainability.
