More travel agents are offering luxury cruise tours or charter flights as demand spikes during Lunar New Year.

Phuc Huy, a local in HCM City said he had had great experiences on cruise ships. Tourists can sunbathe, go to the gym, spa, or 4D cinema while the entertainment areas with various games and clubs are ideal places for children.

“At first I was worried about seasickness and safety. But the ship is huge, the cruise ships are like floating hotels on the sea,” he said.

Previously, cruise ships weren’t popular in Vietnam because people thought they were too expensive. Local firms have co-operated with international shipping lines to offer the most suitable tour packages to visitors.

Doan Thi Thanh Tra, marketing director of Saigontourist, said families with several generations travel together often chose cruise tours because they don’t have to travel around too much as most of the entertainments are on the ship. Cruise tours to Europe or the Middle East often last over 10 days with prices ranging from VND60m (USD2,600) to VND65m.

Demands for charter flights are also on the rise. Marketing director of Vietravel Tran Thi Viet Huong said the prices for charter flights had become more affordable for most families. She said, “The demand is high because passengers don’t have to stop at transit points and the prices are lower now.”

A four-day HCM City-Phuket tour costs VND12m (USD531). Tourists also don’t have to apply for a visa if then choose a four-day tour to explore South Korea’s Jeju Island that costs VND23m. Many tours to Europe, Australia or the US have been fully booked. Arrivals to South Korea, Japan and Thailand also increase sharply during the Tet Holiday.

Tran The Dung, director of The He Tre Tourist Company said tourists also prefer longer tours to explore Mang Den, Kon Tum Province or the mountainous areas of the north-west of Vietnam.

According to Vietnam Tourism Association’s statistics, around 6.5 million Vietnamese travelled abroad in 2016, a rise of 15% over the previous year, and spent around USD8bn. Both the spending and number of Vietnamese tourists are on the rise.
