Development in Vietnam-Laos relations
Vietnamese Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong led a high-level Vietnamese delegation to pay an official friendly visit to Laos from November 24-26, 2016 at the invitation of Lao Party General Secretary and President Bounnhang Vorachith. General Secretary Trong’s visit to Laos was an important political event, affirming the two Parties and nations’ consistent foreign policy of respecting each other and exerting every effort to unceasingly foster the close bonds and trust between the two Parties, countries and peoples of Vietnam and Laos. Vietnam is currently the third-largest investor in Laos, while Laos attracts the most investment from Vietnam among 64 countries and territories where Vietnamese businesses are investing.
According to Le Quoc Nam, General Director of VietinBank Laos, the affirmation made by President Tran Dai Quang during his official visit to Laos in June 2016 as well as Prime Minister of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith’s commitment to continuing to facilitate Vietnamese enterprises’ operations in Laos, helped raise confidence among enterprises and investors in the two countries in the policies of the two Parties and States.
The signing of the Border Trade Agreement between Vietnam and Laos has also significantly contributed to promoting the bilateral trade. According to Tran Bao Giam, Trade Counsellor at the Vietnamese Embassy in Laos, in the time to come, these agreements will continue to bring greater benefits to both businesses and citizens in the two countries.

Believing in the healthy and stable development of friendly and cooperative Vietnam-China relations
In the context of complicated and unpredictable developments in the region and around the world, Vietnam and China continue to intensify exchanges and cooperation in all fields, to maintain peace and stability, to address sea-related issues and to enhance the Vietnam-China strategic cooperative partnership for the stability and development of the two countries, and for peace, stability and prosperity in the region and the world.
Professor Gu Yuanyang, an Academician from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences emphasised that despite some maritime issues, Vietnam and China consistently implement their senior leaders’ common perceptions to jointly address problems. As long as both Parties still make the socio-economic development of each country their top priority, we can be optimistic in expecting that Vietnam-China relations will continue to grow stronger, he added.

Belief in the new spring
The New Year is coming closer and closer. Doctor Le Ba Hung’s yellow apricot tree is blossoming brightly in the sunshine in the yard of his hospital in Phnom Penh. The hospital was built ten years ago by the Quang Tri–based doctor. During his talks with us, Hung recalled the great political events in Vietnam in 2016, notably the 12th National Party Congress. The doctor expressed his great confidence in the leadership of the new cadres of the Party. “The stronger and purer the Party is, the more prosperous Vietnam is, the more confidence, we, overseas Vietnamese have,” Hung emphasised.
At Locomo company in Phnom Penh, there are also a lot of apricot trees being taken good care of. Keeping updated the news at home, Tuan Anh, director of Locomo company said she was glad to hear that the bilateral trade agreement between Vietnam and Cambodia had been signed. It would definitely create more favourable conditions for her business and other Vietnamese people living and working in Cambodia, she said.

The Homeland Choir in France
Hop Ca Que Huong (The Homeland Choir) was established in France in 2009 with the aim of introducing Vietnamese songs and culture to various localities in France, including Choisy-le-Roi a twin city of Vietnam’s.
Ms. Ngan Ha, who leads the choir, said at the beginning, the shows were only organised on the occasion of Vietnam’s National Day and the Lunar New Year (Tet). The choir is usually invited to perform at big events in many localities in France as well as other countries.
Dau Xuan Tuan, a member of the choir said he loved to perform. It helped him ease his nostalgia by performing folksongs honouring the motherland, he added. As for Pierre from France, joining the choir helped him learn more about Vietnam’s culture, land and people. He can feel a very warm atmosphere from Vietnamese families on the occasion of Tet.
