According to VNAT General Director Nguyen Van Tuan, in 2016 Vietnam has welcomed 10 million international passengers, up 25% compared to 2015, while serving 62 million domestic passengers. The total revenue from tourism reached VND400 trillion (US$17.6 billion).
International visitors to Vietnam this year also set two new records: the highest number of visitors in a year (10 million) and the highest volume increase in a year over the same period of the previous year (increase by over 2 million visitors compared to 2015).
Tuan also revealed that on December 25, the sector will welcome the 10 millionth international visitor to Vietnam, who is from the UK, on a flight conducted by the national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines at Phu Quoc International Airport.
Along with the lucky visitor from the UK, visitors No. 9,999,999 (from Germany) and 10,000,001 (from Sweden) will receive medals and souvenirs from the tourism sector. The three lucky visitors are on the same flight to Phu Quoc where they will welcome in the New Year.
According to VNAT, the majority of international markets for international visitors to Vietnam have increased in 2016. To date, the Northeast Asian market continues to lead the structure of international visitors to Vietnam, especially tourists from China, Japan and the Republic of Korea. In 2016, arrivals from the above-mentioned three markets accounted for 30% of total international visitors to Vietnam recording a relatively high level of spending.
Visitors from Western European countries, including five nations that Vietnam has applied unilateral visa exemption for since 2015 and which was extended in 2016 (Italy, the UK, France, Germany and Spain), also saw strong growth. By the end of October 2016, arrivals from those markets reached 635,000, up 16% compared to the same period in 2015. In particular, the Italian market rose by 30%, Spain 27% and the UK 22%.
Russia, the biggest European market for tourism in Vietnam, also recorded high growth of up to 27%. Other small-scale markets such as the Netherlands and Sweden also witnessed significant growth.
In 2017, Vietnam’s tourism sector set a target of welcoming 11.5 million international passengers, serving 66 million domestic visitors and netting a total revenue of VND460 trillion.
Achievements of the tourism sector in 2016 are equal to and have even exceeded the set target of the National Strategy for Tourism Development by 2020: striving to receive 10-10.5 million international visitors and 47-48 million domestic visitors, with total revenue from tourists reaching US$17-18 billion by 2010.
