New Southwest Tourism Experiences
Tourism in the southwest of Vietnam not only features floating markets and orchards but also keeps hidden charms waiting for visitors to discover. The area includes Chanh Giac Enlightenment Monastery, the largest in the country, along with immense pineapple fields, dragon fields and bird sanctuaries. And, visitors will have the chance to enjoy delicious specialties such as rice soup with duck meat, xeo cake with cassava and shrimp, and sesbania sesban flower with fish sauce.
Long Dinh, a tourist attraction in Tien Giang province, is about 100 km from Ho Chi Minh City. This is a starting point of the Southwest journey of exciting discoveries. River-side Long Dinh mattress-making village is the first stop of the trip. More than 100 villager families live on making mattresses made from hyacinth. While a majority of families use machines to make mattresses, some still manually weave the covering. The mattress making started in the village since 1956 when first-generation villagers brought the trade from Kim Son, Phat Diem, Ninh Binh province. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn and experience how to make mats, from choosing material, weaving, dyeing and steaming to finishing products. Mattresses have become meaningful souvenirs to tourists.
Tourists can also discover the sacredness of Chanh Giac Enlightenment Monastery located on original 30 ha and expanded 200 ha in Tan Phuoc district, Tien Giang province. The monastery lies on a vast space surrounded by canals and immense pineapple and green dragon fields and encircled by ancient trees where birds chirp all day long.

Continuing the journey, visitors will reach Bao Dang Resort, a pleasant green hideaway. The retreat is situated next to Truc Lam Zen Monastery, separated by just a narrow canal. The entry is beautified by colourful flowers and surrounded by pineapple and dragon fruit fields. Boats rest idle along the canal to wait for interesting trips of visitors. When the bell sounds from the monastery at the break of dawn, tourists can enjoy morning tea, watch the sunrise and watch birds flying to find foods and friends. Taking a deep inhale, they will start with the novel experience of harvesting pineapples and dragon fruits and tasting fresh fruits right at the garden. They can also find local food specialists like rice soup with duck meat, xeo cake with cassava and shrimp, sesbania sesban flower with fish sauce.
In the afternoon, they will be able to have the experience unique to southern forests where bird sanctuaries with thousands of birds sitting closely together on tree branches.
