The palace of a bygone era

With a fascinating blend of cultures and history, Dalat Palace Hotel was completed after six years of construction, comprising 30 luxury rooms designed in pre-WWI Victorian style.

According to historical sources, in 1905 when work began on creating a hilltop resort, or “sanotorium” in the romantic highland of Dalat, the elegant Dalat Palace Hotel was built overlooking the lake and featuring all the modern luxuries of that time. Back then it was called The Langbian Palace, after the highest peak in Dalat.

With a fascinating blend of cultures and history, the hotel was completed after six years of construction, comprising 30 luxury rooms designed in pre-WWI Victorian style. The Palace hosted the rich and famous of the time, who came to Dalat to enjoy hunting in the cool mountain climate. The hotel rates at the time were charged daily, weekly or monthly, and full board was mandatory. Evenings were filled with ballroom dance parties, with a full band permanently in residence to entertain the guests.

In 1941, the Palace was fully refurbished in a much praised Art-deco style, with additional rooms added. In 1946 the hotel was host to the negotiators of the future Fontainebleau conference between the Viet-Minh and the French authorities. The National Hero, General Vo Nguyen Giap, stayed in Suite 101 during the months of April and May 1946. Other famous guests have included actor Robert de Niro, the Lord Mayor of London, the Queen and H.R. Prince Hendrik of Denmark. The hotel also played host to many visiting heads of states who were personal guests of Emperor Bao Dai, himself a resident of Dalat, with his three palaces standing close to the hotel.

Over the years the hotel changed hands several times, until World War II began. From March to June 1945, the hotel was closed due to the Japanese military occupation when it was used to accommodate the Commandant of the Japanese Armed Forces in Vietnam.
