HCMC – A head-on collision between two coaches on Prenn Pass in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong on June 19 morning killed at least seven people and injured more than a dozen.

Local media reported that while traveling on Prenn Pass, around three kilometers from the province’s Dalat City, at about 10:30 a.m., a 42-seat coach of Le My Travel Co hit a road worker and then a 32-seat coach of transport firm Thanh Lich in the opposite direction.

The seven killed include the driver of the Le My coach, the road worker and five passengers on the coach of Thanh Lich, one of them a nine-year-old child. The injured were rushed to hospital for treatment and most of them are in critical condition.

The driver of the Thanh Lich coach, which was on its way from the coastal city of Phan Thiet to the resort city of Dalat, was quoted by Tuoi Tre newspaper as saying that the vehicle of Le My seemed to be out of control. He tried to slow down his vehicle but was still unable to avoid the collision.

There were 16 people on the Thanh Lich coach when the traffic accident happened at a road section, which is being repaired and has its width narrowed by one-third.

According to Nguyen Duc Thuan, deputy director of Lam Dong General Hospital, the hospital is treating serious cases of traumatic brain injury.

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh, chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety, on June 19 told the Ministry of Transport, the governments of Lam Dong, Dong Nai and Binh Thuan provinces to urgently investigate the cause of the tragedy, clarify responsibilities of those involved and impose proper sanctions against violators.

Binh ordered comprehensive checks on Thanh Lich and My Le in terms of compliance with regulations on passenger transport. Meanwhile, provincial authorities were told to mobilize resources to give medical attention to the injured and assist the victims’ families.
