More and more passengers seem to disdain buses in Ho Chi Minh City as the number of bus goers has plummeted for three years in a row.
The first six months of this year saw that number drop by 14 million compared to the same period of last year, the municipal Department of Transport said in a recent report.
This is the third consecutive year that 90 out of 107 subsidized bus routes in the city have experienced a fall in their number of passengers, the report said.
Le Hoang Minh, deputy director of the department, attributed the slump to worsening traffic congestion, a lack of exclusive bus lanes, and the degradation of the current bus fleet.
Minh continued that harsh competition from rising transport alternatives like Uber and Grab taxis and taxi motorbikes have rubbed salt into that wound.
Measures such as altering the number of routes and improving public transport infrastructure will be taken by the department in the coming years to attract more passengers, the official said.
