The Hanoitimes – The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) held the conference entitled “Vietnam targets sustainable tourism in the era of climate change” in Hanoi on August 17 with the participation of 200 representatives from relevant agencies and many domestic and international experts.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Dang Thi Bich Lien said that Vietnam’s tourism will maintain a relatively rapid pace of development, but there remain numerous challenges, particularly the competitiveness of destinations and sustainability of tourist development.
She stressed that it’s necessary to join hands among sectors and localities nationwide and tourism sector attracts and needs the widespread participation of the communities.
The sector needs to formulate effective models to encourage the participation of the whole society under the unified leadership of the State, to help increase economic efficiency and protect the natural resources and the environment, Lien added.
In Vietnam, for example, rising sea levels could cause affects to beach, occur inland erosion, and damage to the cultural heritages and coastal eco-tourism areas.
Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Vietnam Bruno Angelet highlighted climate change as a serious issue that Vietnam and many other countries are coping with.
The EU-funded capacity development programme for environmentally and socially responsible tourism in Vietnam (EU-ESRT) is designed to help Vietnam raise public awareness about climate change and its impact on the tourism industry, he said.
During the conference, delegates highlighted the need to combine tourism and environmental protection, while boosting publicity campaigns to incrase awareness about the environment.
On the occasion, the VNAT’s Institute for Tourism Development Research and the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in tourism and climate change.
