NA completes personnel plan for National Election Council
On April 11, the National Assembly approved a list of members of the National Electional Council (NEC) and the Council on National Defence and Security (CNDS) presented earlier by President Tran Dai Quang and NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
The Council on National Defence and Security (CNDS) includes Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc – Prime Minister, Vice Chairman of the Council; three members namely Madame Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan – NA Chairwoman, Mr. Ngo Xuan Lich – Minister of Defence, Mr To Lam – Minister of Public Security.
Vice Chairs of the National Electoral Council (NEC) are Mr. Truong Hoa Binh – Deputy Prime Minister and Madame Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh – Vice State President. The National Electoral Council also includes 13 other members.
PM welcomes Philippines Foreign Minister
PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc suggested Viet Nam and the Philippines further create favorable conditions for their businesses to expand cooperation, particularly rice trading, during his meeting with Foreign Minister Jose Almendras on Monday in Ha Noi.
As a member of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Viet Nam always facilitates the Philippines’ companies to do business in Viet Nam, the Government chief said.
New chairman appointed for Party’s economic commission
Nguyen Van Binh, the former Governor of the State Bank of VietNam, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Economic Affairs.
Politburo member Binh replaces Vuong Dinh Hue, who is now a Deputy PM.
VN eyes ending flooding in urban centres by 2050
The PM has approved the amended decision on the development of drainage in Viet Nam’s urban centres and industrial parks up to 2025 and a vision towards 2050, with the aim that urban centres will be free of flooding by 2050.
The revised decision No.589/QD-TTg dated April 6, 2016 was developed and issued based on decision No.1930/QD-TTg dated November 20, 2009 by the PM.
The new decision is intended to improve the legal framework for drainage development, develop comprehensive and stable systems of water drainage which involve the construction of networks of wastewater-collecting culverts and treatment plants, increase connections to sewers by households and ensure regular maintenance of the drainage systems.
VN, Philippines affirm importance of int’l law in sea issue settlement
Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Binh held talks with Filipino Secretary of Foreign Affairs Jose Almendras in Ha Noi on April 11, during which they reaffirmed the importance of obeying international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
They emphasized the need to fully implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), step up negotiations to early reach a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC), avoid actions that complicate the situation, and not use or threaten to use violence.
VN surpasses global economic upheavals
The Vietnamese economy spectacularly overcame global economic upheavals thanks to increasing domestic demands and proper market-oriented processing industries, said the World Bank (WB).
The U.S.-led development bank on April 11 issued its updated report on the East Asia-Pacific Region.
According to the lender, after weathering the recession period in 2012-2013, the economy rebounded, attaining 6% economic growth in 2014 and 6.7% in 2015.
The poverty rate dropped constantly in which extremely poor rate fell to under 3%.
Electricity output increases by 14% in Q1
The national power system produced a total of 40.9 billion kWh in the first quarter, an increase of 14.25 percent against the same period last year, according to the Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN).
Of which, commercial electricity amounted to 35.22 billion kWh. In March alone, the system produced 14.92 billion kWh, 11.92 billion kWh of which was commercial electricity.
During the first quarter, the North-South 500kV transmission line transmitted 2.97 billion kWh to the central region and 1.88 billion kWh to the southern region.
Number of tourists to Lam Dong province soars
The Central Highlands province of Lam Dong attracted 1.32 million tourists in the first three months of this year, an increase of 10.9 percent from the same period last year, according to the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The number of foreign arrivals reached 66,000, up 25%. Revenue from tourism services was estimated at VND 2.376 trillion (aboutUS$100 million).
In March alone, the province welcomed 450,000 tourists, including 22,000 foreigners.
Three Vietnamese on Forbes Asia’s 50 power businesswomen
Three Vietnamese women have been named on US business magazine Forbes’ list of Asia’s 50 Power Businesswomen 2016.
The businesswomen are Cao Thi Ngoc Dung, chairman and CEO of Phu Nhuan Jewelry (PNJ); Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, co-founder and chairman of Sovico Holdings; and Thai Huong, chairman of milk supplier TH Group./.
