The UK capital jumped five spots to become the world’s top destination in TripAdvisor’s 2016 Travelers’ Choice Destination awards.
In TripAdvisor’s words, the charming Vietnamese capital has aged well, preserving the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture, while making room for modern developments alongside.
Hanoi may have shrugged off several former names, including Thang Long, or “ascending dragon,” but it hasn’t forgotten its past, as sites such as Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison attest.
Lakes, parks, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of this city, which is easily explored by taxi.
According to newswire CNN, TripAdvisor processed millions of user reviews over the course of a year to select its Travelers’ Choice winners for the world’s top destinations.
TripAdvisor chief marketing officer Barbara Messing was quoted by CNN as saying the awards recognised the world’s most beloved travel spots, based on feedback and booking interest from the TripAdvisor community.
