The National Traffic Safety Committee has requested the police to promptly investigate a recent theft in which a Spanish family lost an iPad and an iPhone when traveling on a bus from Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh City.
The incident happened when David, his wife Marta and their two children, were riding a non-stop night bus of Nha Trang-based Phuong Nam Travel Company on July 21 evening.
David was holding an iPad and an iPhone before he fell asleep. When he woke up at around 3 a.m. on July 22, he found that the devices had been stolen.
After arriving in HCMC, he reported the case to local police thanks to the help of another passenger, Tran Thi Ly Na.
Na later posted about the incident on her Facebook.
According to her, at 4 p.m. on July 22, David used the Find My iPhone app and could track their stolen iPad to the very bus that they had just left.
The driver was the only one in the bus at the time, but he claimed the devices were not in the bus. Minutes later, David could no longer track his iPad, according to Ly Na.
When David’s family report the incident to Phuong Nam Company’s office on Pham Ngu Lao St., they could not get any help from its staff, Ly Na wrote.
Her post has been widely shared over the past few days, prompting the National Traffic Safety Committee to call for an investigation into the case.
Khuat Viet Hung, the committee’s deputy chairman, said he had contacted Phuong Nam Travel Company regarding the case.
A company employee responded that Facebook users “can post whatever they want.”
Hung said he then asked for the name of the person answering the phone and requested to speak with the company’s director but he was rejected.
A report on the VietnamNet news website quoted Phuong Nam Company Director Khanh Tran as saying that she also requested the police to investigate the incident.
She threatened to “sue anyone who posted untrue information on the internet,” according to the report.
David’s family has traveled to Singapore after their Vietnam trip.
