NDO – The outcomes of Vietnam-US comprehensive co-operation over the past 20 years, including in the fields of culture and people exchanges, always play an important role in consolidating friendship and promoting reconciliation between the two nations.

>> Vietnam cultural days in full swing in US

The agreement was reached by Vietnam’s Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh and US Under Secretary of State Richard Stengel at a working session on August 10 on the margins of Vietnam Cultural Days in the US.

At the session, Minister Anh expressed his thanks to the US State Department for its support to the organisation of ‘Vietnamese Cultural Days in the US’.

He also appreciated the US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation under the US State Department for its funding to safeguard cultural heritages in Vietnam and other activities for Vietnam’s culture, sports and tourism sector in general.

He noted with pleasure that Vietnam and the US have fostered exchanges of art troupes and sports delegations as well as tourism co-operation.

As the US has become Vietnam’s top foreign investor in the tourism sector in recent years, the Vietnamese government has worked actively to create most the favourable conditions for US visitors by providing them with visa exemptions for up to 1 year so as to reach its target of welcoming 1 million US tourists by 2017.

The Vietnamese Minister voiced his hope that the two countries would step up co-operation in the fields of culture, sports and tourism in order to fully tap the co-operation potential.

For his part, Under Secretary Richard Stengel congratulated the Vietnamese minister on the success of ‘Vietnam Cultural Days in the US’.

He also stressed the need to increase exchanges and mutual understanding through arts activities, concerts, exhibitions and other cultural and sporting events.

Vietnamese Minister Hoang Tuan Anh also took the occasion to present an English-Vietnamese bilingual version of ‘Truyen Kieu’ (The Tale of Kieu), an epic poem by great Vietnamese poet Nguyen Du, to US politicians including President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and Senator John McCain.

Under Secretary Stengel received the gifts and promised to give them to the recipients.
