THUA THIEN-HUE (VNS) — An internet festival took place in Hue in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue yesterday as part of the “Improving Computer Usage and Public Internet Access in Viet Nam” project.
Held by the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Department of Information and Communications and the central province of Nghe An’s Centre of Information Technology and Communications, the event attracted a crowd of local people and visitors.
The project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has been carried out since 2011 in 40 provinces and cities across the country, helping to connect over 1,900 public libraries and communal post offices to the internet.
Deputy director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Huu Minh said public internet access points in the locality had proven effective, meeting the increasing demand for information of locals and visitors.
The project had contributed to encouraging and supporting locals to use computers and the internet, while offering chances for disadvantaged people to access IT and improving the cultural and spiritual lives of local people, Minh stressed.
Thua Thien-Hue has an IT developing plan through 2020 which will focus on community development to simplify access to information on production and business, healthcare, education and training, tourism and administrative procedures.
The locality hopes to install broadband internet access across the province, and have 70 per cent of the urban population connected to the internet. — VNS
