Hoang Ngoc Hung, chief representative of the Port Authority of Inland Waterway Area No. 1 in Halong, told the Daily on June 24 afternoon that there had not been any final decision for the tourist boats to leave the shore due to forecasts of bad weather in the northern province on June 25.

Typhoon Kujira entered Quang Ninh Province and Haiphong City at noon on June 24 and then weakened into a tropical low.

According to the provincial government, tourist boats in the bay which was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site are safe at shelters and waiting for weather conditions to improve.

Regarding hundreds of tourists stranded on Co To Island, the provincial authorities said they are waiting for an appropriate time to continue their journey.

Doan Thi Thanh Tra, marketing and communications manager at Saigontourist Travel Service Company, said 290 customers of the company’s Hanoi branch canceled their bookings for the Halong-Cat Ba tour due to the storm.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the tropical low was in northeastern provinces at 8 p.m. on June 24 with strong winds at force 6 and was moving northwest towards the mainland at about 10 kilometers per hour. The low pressure is forecast to stay at the Vietnam-China border area at 7 p.m. on June 25.

However, under the impact of the tropical low, the upper region of the northern gulf will still have strong winds and the sea will remain rough. Strong winds will affect the country’s north, including Quang Ninh, Haiphong, Thai Binh and Nam Dinh.

The national weather forecast center warned of possible flash floods and landslides in the northern upland.

Vu Anh Tuan from the center told people to be on high alert. Post-typhoon winds are often stronger than those before the typhoon.

Damages caused by the typhoon could be heavy if people are not well-prepared, Tuan said.

At a meeting in Hanoi on June 24 morning, the National Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control said coastal provinces and cities from Quang Ninh to Binh Thuan had already issued warnings to nearly 65,000 boats and fish farms with around 300,000 people on board.

Nearly 1,200 people and 68 boats at Bach Long Vi Island were evacuated before the typhoon came. Strong winds injured one person and sank two boats at a dock on the island, heard the meeting.

The typhoon killed at least three people as of on June 24 afternoon.

A report of the steering committee for storm and flood control and search-rescue said floods caused by heavy rains washed away three people in the northern mountainous province of Son La, with a four-year-old kid still missing on June 24, VietnamPlus reports. Besides, a leader of Haiphong City’s Cat Ba Town confirmed with Tuoi Tre on June 24 that a resident in Haiphong City died while reinforcing his home prior to the arrival of the typhoon.
