Both Vietnam and Myanmar are confident to win their semifinal clash today, June 13, at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore but the former seem to hold more advantage thanks to their mysterious playing style at the tournament.
The game, taking place at 1:00pm today (Vietnam time) and which will be broadcast live on Vietnam’s television channel VTV6, is predicted to be tense and have many goals scored for both sides.
Performances in the group stage proved that they are equal rivals for the match, especially with the sharpness in scoring.
Myanmar were unbeatable in group A, beating Indonesia 4-2, Singapore 2-1, the Philippines 5-1 and drawing 3-3 with Cambodia.
Meanwhile, Vietnam defeated Brunei 6-0, Malaysia 5-1, Laos 1-0, and Timor Leste 4-0, but lost 1-3 to Thailand in group B.
As preparing for SEA Games, Vietnam and Myanmar had a friendly match in May in Vietnam and they drew 2-2.
“We are ready for the semis game and confident to beat Vietnam to advance to the final match,” said Myanmar’s coach Kyi Lwin.
Nay Lin Tun, midfielder captain of Myanmar, said, “We are confident to defeat Vietnam. The 2-2 draw with Vietnam in May proved that we can surpass them.”
Myanmar have a dangerous left midfielder Aung Si Thu, who scored four out of 14 goals of Myanmar in four games in the group stage.
However, coach Nguyen Thanh Son – assistant of Vietnam’s coach Toshiya Miura – noted that Myanmar staged a formation at SEA Games that is similar to the one in the friendly match with Vietnam last month.
The only difference is in the left side, with Aung Si Thu and Zaw Hein Thiha exchanging their positions in the midfield and the defensive line, Son clarified.
Mysterious Vietnam
But Myanmar are almost impossible to guess the formation of Vietnam today since the Japanese coach Toshiya Miura arranged five different teams to play in four styles in the five matches in the group stage.
The four formations Vietnam applied were 4-4-2, 5-3-2, 3-4-3, and 4-1-4-1, according to coach Doan Minh Xuong.
In addition, Vietnam have numerous sharp hunters at this tournament. All the 17 goals Vietnam scored in the group stage were made by many players from all the three lines.
“It is certain that fans will be happier to see more goals scored during this semifinal match.
“However, it still depends on the playing styles selected by two coaches.
“We will satisfy our fans with a win,” said Vietnam’s coach Miura.
Coach Tran Minh Chien from the Vietnam’s fund for football investment and development forecast that the Myanmar – Vietnam semis game will be fantastic with numerous attacks but Vietnam will win at a distance of two goals.
Myanmar may block Cong Phuong of Vietnam and it will be the chances for the star striker to pull wide the defensive line of Myanmar and create gaps for other Vietnamese hunters, Chien analyzed.
