Hue tune recognized as national heritage

PANO – The Hue anthem (ca Hue) has been recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage, said Hoang Ngoc Khanh, Chief of Office of Thua Thien Hue provincial People’s Committee.

Initiated in Thuan Hoa – Phu Xuan (now Thua Thien – Hue) over three centuries ago, the composition combines literature with music as an artistic performance which increasingly attracts domestic and foreign audiences.

Performed along the Perfume River (Huong River), in chambers, and in hotels in Hue city and at important events, performers of the piece of music employ a 16-string guitar, 4-chord lute, flute, and monochord guitar.

To improve the quality of the tune, Hue authorities have issued regulations for the length and the minimum number of instruments, singers, and instrumentalists for each performance. The Hue provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has also provided training programs and granted licenses to nearly 500 Hue musical artists and instrumentalists.
