— Vietnam wishes to strengthen ties with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said during his talks with visiting IMF Deputy Managing Director Mitsuhiro in Hanoi on Friday. PM Dung told his guest that Vietnam is focusing on completing market economy institutions and accelerating global integration. Furusawa said the IMF is willing to continue supporting Vietnam, especially with policy consultation, technical assistance and capacity building.

— The People’s Court in the central province of Nghe An on Friday sentenced two women, Luc Thi Oanh and Le Thi Yen, to 12 years in jail each for selling a 16-year-old local girl to China in Octorber 2014. They committed the crime under the direction of another woman, Le Thi Hoa, who is being hunted by police. Hoa promised to pay Oanh and Yen VND5 million ($229) each for every woman successfully sold to China.

— Doctors at Ho Chi Minh City-based Tu Du Obstetrics Hospital on Friday implanted an embryo into the uterus of a local woman who acts as a surrogate mother for a 44-year-old Vietnamese-American woman, who is infertile. This is the first case of surrogacy that has been implemented in the city. These two women are close relatives.

— A woman who kicked a male airline staffer at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport in the thigh on Thursday has been fined VND7.5 million (US$344). The woman committed the act after the man prevented her from boarding a flight bringing a baby carriage with her that day. Under current regulations, if an air passenger is not accompanied by a baby, he or she is not allowed to carry a stroller into a plane.

— The management board of the Son Tra peninsula and beaches in the central city of Da Nang has said it will coordinate with the Son Tra forestry protection office to offer special tours of the peninsula during which tourists will have chances to watch and photograph brown-shanked douc langurs that are living there. The first tour of this kind will be launched early next month, the board said.

— Vietnam’s Taekwondo athlete Truong Thi Kim Tuyen defeated her Filipino rival Bermejo Irene Therese 19-7 in the women’s under-46kg final on Friday night to win the 62nd gold medal for Vietnam at the 28th SEA Games that is taking place in Singapore.
