The Thao (Sports), will be their fourth encounter in two years.

In the last three games, Vietnam has lost two and won one.

Vietnam were defeated 1-2 by Thailand in the final game of the women’s football event at the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Mandalay, Myanmar.

Last year, Thailand edged out hosts Vietnam 2-1 in the play-off to compete for a ticket to advance to the Women’s World Cup 2015 in Canada.

Also last year, Vietnam beat Thailand 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.

Vietnamese striker Minh Nguyet was quoted as saying, “We are still feeling regret for our loss to Thailand and missing the chance to play in the finals of the World Cup this year.

“We want to encounter the Thai rivals again.”

At the Ho Chi Minh City championship running from May 1 to 10, Vietnam rose to the semifinals as the winners of Group B with three wins, beating Myanmar 3-2, Malaysia 7-0, and the Philippines 4-0.

Meanwhile, Thailand lost 0-3 to Australia, crushed Indonesia 10-0, and routed Laos 12-0.

Japanese coach Norimatsu Takashi of Vietnam said confidently that his players have progressed match after match with his new technical formation of 4-4-2.

Last year and before that, the Vietnamese women mainly played with the defensive 3-5-2 formation under the leadership of Chinese coach Chow Yun Fat.

Takashi added, “We know the way the Thais play football and we know how to beat them.”

Thai coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian predicted the coming clash will be not easy for her players because “Vietnamese players are playing better and better.”
