Vietnam is highly likely to make it to the semifinals of the 2015 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship as it will face Chinese Taipei, an equal rival, in a quarterfinal game in Tianjin, China on Tuesday.
The Vietnamese women’s team now ranks 35th in the world while Chinese Taipei stands at the 39th place.
Commenting on the match in the last-eight round, Nguyen Ba Nghi, vice chairman of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation, said, “Both teams have met each other many times and Vietnam has gained more wins than losses.”
The Vietnamese beat the Taiwanese 3-0 in the qualifiers of the 2014 World Volleyball Championship.
However, the Chinese Taipei team has made much progress recently and will create more challenges for Vietnam, Nghi added.
If defeating Chinese Taipei, Vietnam will take on either South Korea or Iran in the last-four round on May 27. South Korea ranks tenth in the world while Iran places 101st.
Earlier, Vietnam crushed Mongolia 3-0 and came from behind to defeat Japan 3-2 in the preliminary qualification round last week.
In the second qualification round, Vietnam surpassed Iran 3-2 and lost 0-3 to China.
